It was Disney related, and really, there are so many resources that people just don't think of using that are FREE. I just don't see spending money that we could use for fun (or, let's face it, necessities) and said so.

One of the responses was that thete really wasn't anything fun in Disney for $15!!

WHAT???

Enter my newest list...5 Things $15 Or Under weekly posts.

And, for the inaugural post, my mommy virtual vacation time obsession. Running. Or things you'll love, mother runner or girl runner (or any runner!!).

1.) Cold Weather Headband ( $ 12.99 Kohl's)

I bought this one for my first half marathon from Kohl's, for less than $10. (And I probably stacked a 30% off with a dollar off offer, cause that's how I roll at Kohl's!)

It keeps ears warm without overheating the rest of me, lets me rock the messy bun, high ponytail, or running braid, and is easy to slide off yet small enough to stuff somewhere if needed.

2.) Lacrosse ball ($2.99 at Dick's Sporting Goods)

This is a life saver for me! I discovered the love/hate relationship of a foam roller this past year. Running revealed every flaw working 15 plus years on retail on marble floors wearing heels had done to my body. Add to that two lil dudes and a weak ligament in my ankle which makes some days harder than others. But, upon further research and convos with my PT, I discovered the unending insanity my pirifomus muscle was inflicting on me.

This little ball saves me hours of limping, and gives my husband plenty of laughs as I roll up against the wall. Plus, it's great for taking care of my feet, rolling right along.

3.) Travel Roller ($4.99 Dick's Sporting Goods)

My biggest issue with our recent Disney trip was the fear that without my beloved foam roller, my body would literally shut down and all the progress I had made in the last year would be put on pause. I roll at least every other day, on top of yoga, and can't imagine how my body would feel without it.

It's not ideal, or something I would use long term, but given the fact that our packing would have absolutely no room for my big ol roller, it worked, and better than I ever imagined. Especially on tight hamstrings after hours of walking and chasing after a three year old! And, it's portable size let's me throw it in my race bag for a quick foot roll or other areas post or pre race if needed.

4.) Dr. Scholl's Active Series BlisterDefense Anti-Friction Stick ( $8.19 Walmart)

I use it on my toes, heel, back of my ankle, and my side to prevent rubbing and chafing. The worse thing is getting a new running shirt, only to have the seam rub the side of you for 45 minutes or more During a training run, or a race because you didn't get a test run in while wearing it!

5.) Yoga socks (various prices and places! Mine are Calia by Carrie from Dick's Sporting Goods $8.99)

Yoga is essential not only for stating healthy while running, but for insanity that is being a mom. We tend to not put ourselves first and our body *and minds* suffer for it. I'm usually a barefoot yoga girl, but during the winter months I like a yoga sock.

Sometimes I don't have time to bust out my mat and get centered, so on go my yoga socks for a quick ten minute session.

See you next week with another 5 for $15 or less! Happy running!
I have great hair, my make up is on point, I'm organized, and no pain whatsoever from running or normal everyday activity.

I'm not sure why this happens. There's no logical explanation.

Less than one month home, and I'm a hot mess mom once again. Between calamity days, yelling at my little ones (not really yelling, but pretty close) to get up so we don't miss the bus, needing to get out and run (but it's been frigidly cold), dishes, laundry, and various other insanity, my Disney Mojo is gone.

My hair is in desperate need of attention, I haven't put make up on in almost a week, and the cutest of my yoga and Victoria Sport pants have been replaced by warmer not so attractive outerwear.

BECAUSE OF THE FRIGID WEATHER.

At least, that's part of what I'm blaming. Trying to get out for a run has been near impossible, not only because of the cold and my neighborhood's refusal to shovel the sidewalks (street running freaks me out!), but my youngest dislikes the cold air so much that he will literally yell at the top of his lungs until we head back home. (Seriously, he would suck it up, but it has been close to zero since we've returned home.)

I'm on a mission to get it all back, if only glimpses here and there until the world outside thaws.

Or until I can head back to the castle. Or Spaceship Earth. Maybe Madame Leota can help me out.

But, for real, I think there's something about being somewhere and remembering how easy the good days can be.

In that line of thinking, I'm adding a few new things to my itinerary. Keeping in mind that I'm in no way an expert at all things Mouse, Running, and definitely Motherhood, I thought I'd share thoughts, tidbits, or other fun things I've found in hopes that the magic (or, more importantly, my booty!) will get in gear.Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-89612449793970089952018-01-18T10:49:00.001-08:002018-01-18T10:49:18.232-08:00The Half That I HatedLast year, I began my running journey. Like any other thing I've ever attempted, I researched, planned, and became focused on the goal, all the while knowing that the journey towards this elusive (for me, at any rate) 13.1 mile achievement would be filled with chaos (I have a three year old), ups and downs (I have a five now six year old that brings home germs from school), and multitasking (I also work from home). But, I was enjoying my new activity that gave me a mental mini vacation, pushed my body to discover every weakness it had, and made my yoga pants look fantastic.

I'm a mom, I live in yoga pants most days. Or workout pants that really resemble leggings from Victoria Secret. Sometimes, if I'm really lucky, jeans.

I signed up for this feat, knowing I had six months to prepare, and many 5k opportunities in between. I ran every morning, pushing my littlest in a stroller for added resistance, planning, and making running playlists.

My first 5k I found out a friend was expecting, which was awesome and a great way to start my race journey. No medal, but the memory made up for that. By my third, and one medal later, I was hooked. It was more fun than I realized, easier than I thought (I was putting the work in!), and I had a running crew to share the good and the bad with along the way.

Then, Facebook fooled me by posting a 5k/half marathon literally down the street from me. With a medal for the half, plus a bonus windbreaker for the first so many who signed up!

That darn medal did it all for me. It was in our Metroparks, with a wolf as the main character in the design. Close by, cool medal, and free bonus jacket if I signed up now? Yes! My husband even encouraged me to take the leap.

Then he asked, right after I signed up and had my new partner in crime locked in, how long a half marathon was. When I told him, he actually had the audacity to looked stunned. I am pretty sure he thought it might only be a bit longer than the 3.1 miles I had been running in over the summer.

Great.

So, I ran. And with any great plan comes insane complications. It seemed every single weakness I had (a weak ligament in my ankle from an injury while pregnant with my first, a bad knee, years of working in heels on marble floors for 45-55 hours a week, all those really cute shoes!!!) sprung up to hinder and attack my poor body.

I did yoga, tried to add strength training, and dusted off the stationary bike in my office. The office that had somehow become the cluttered mess I avoided since I had children.

Long story short, I never got beyond 6 miles for my longest run. Between my IT band being a complete jerk, PTA mom responsibilities, germs (UGH!!!!!), and life happenings (selling our "extra" house), I let myself down. But, there was no way I wasn't going to do my best. Even if I had to swear and cry along the way. I wasn't a total lost cause, but I would be lying if I didn't say I wasn't worried.

The race sponsors sent out info letting everyone know if they were walking (HALLELUJAH!) the marathon, they could arrive early to make sure they could finish before the roads were opened. And, the temps were forecasted for a chilly arrival of mid fall temps and possible snow!!!

The long and short of it...it snowed. I froze, layered correctly (the power of finding out and testing things in advance!!), had a great running partner who shares my love of intervals, and we did great until about mile 8 or so.

Then, I began to hit a wall. To be honest, the view was pretty in a way, but the simplicity of it all BORED ME TO NO END! Worst of all, the roads were banked, and while I run in my neighborhood, banking is pretty rare unless you count the hills. But hills and banking are two totally different animals. And not very friendly ones either.

We finished, texting and posting random Facebook updates in the snow with our gloves on or off depending on where we were interval and energy wise, shared Jelly Belly Energy Beans, drank all the water we were offered, Honey Stinger Wafers, and swore profusely as we neared the end of our ordeal.

I had my first ice bath (who knew ice could be so darn wonderful??), yoga recovery for half an hour, and gladly kissed my boys when I got home. That medal is hanging with its friends, and I both smile at it and glare as I pass by.

But, to be honest I just don't know if I'm going to ever do another one. My running group is already trying to get me to sign up for another one, but I'm just not sure I want to torture myself that greatly anytime soon. If I do, there will be a castle involved, a few rides, and a good dose of training non stop beforehand, with plenty of swearing and new running shoes along the way.

But, I can say I'm a half marathoner now. And that's pretty cool.Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-50311444464056752732017-07-29T06:40:00.001-07:002017-07-29T06:40:15.960-07:00But Still I Run
I did it. I signed up for my first half marathon. Three and a half months from now.

I've run five 5ks, logged my miles training, sucked it up through injuries/healing/swearing during foam rolling, and somehow balancing it not so greatly with family life.

But 13.1 miles are coming, whether I'm prepared or not.

I run. Alone.

The only motivation I have is me. At any moment, I can stop my run and give up. There's no one yelling at me to keep going, go faster, watch my form. If you swim, you stop you drown (or float). But when you run, it gets tough. You might swear, cry (been there), scream...laugh, smile. But you have the choice every single step if the way to stop or keep going.

That's why I love it. And sometimes hate it.

There's the moments I want to give in, skip, or when life gets in the way and I can't get my run in I berate myself.

But still I run.

I'm tired of the moments I tell myself I'm not fast enough, or I'm not pretty enough, thin enough, or good enough. Running has changed me. I know I can beat goals I never thought possible, and my biggest competition is myself (though there are the moments when I look at someone else and still have that feeling of not bring enough, but it is quickly swept aside now).

Someone once told me at my first 5k that they don't give out "participation medals". Of course, this person never ran in her in life, yet still laughed at me.

It's called a finisher medal. And it marks my journey, and every other runner who makes the choice to keep running especially when they really don't want to.

Though, I will run for a really good margarita or chocolate, too.

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-1887783809785709652017-06-17T05:04:00.001-07:002017-06-17T05:04:49.220-07:00Running, Rolling, And Run Disney
I'm drinking coffee, and thinking that all the swearing and pain from foam rolling was so worth it. After my last 5k, my IT band made my knee really angry. Like, incredibly bad. But, I was sucking it up, and trying to still run. I could barely do it, and pretty much went so far back in the progress I made that, I admit, I was getting angry.

But, I'm learning my body needs to be taken care of. That $35 was the best money I've ever spent (along with my shoes and inserts, lol!).

I know each of us is busy, and life gets in the way. I'm trying to remind myself to keep this morning's feeling of good health and contentment when I'm struggling.

These are my RunDisney Virtual Race Series medals (my son's for August haven't come in yet, and he's jealous!), and I'm excited to get beyond 42 minutes. If my body cooperates.
Going from being told I might never walk on my own while pregnant with my first, and the pain my feet have gone through this past year to running a 5k, and most importantly being healthy and becoming strong makes me want to keep this going. I know it won't ever be perfect, and I might not be the fastest, but that doesn't matter.

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-25892520256056627352017-05-18T07:08:00.001-07:002017-05-18T07:09:56.356-07:00The Road To Running: Rain or ShineMy body has the crazy idea that maybe I need to take care of myself. Unfortunately, I don't listen well, if at all. This means I need the message delivered LOUD AND CLEAR.

If you've read any of my Disney revelation blog, you know some of this. But I'm pretty sure I really haven't let on just how bad it had gotten. Last Spring, my life was in a crazy constant tumble of insanity. As a mom to two adorable, active, and at times spirited little boys under the age of five, life was a nonstop journey of overwhelming activities that made me feel like I was forever on a hamster wheel dedicated to never-ending catching up. I was neglecting myself, my marriage (I kept forgetting how lucky and loved I was, and my frustrations made me stressed which definitely hindered my communication ability), but giving what I thought was my energy to my sons. Then, my feet started to hurt. Just a tinge here and there, especially after wearing a certain pair of really cute sandals. What I didn't know then was that I was developing a horrendous case of plantar fasciitis in both feet that would hinder my ability to walk for almost a year.

It became so bad that I had to seek medical advice. I stopped doing my favorite things (yoga, dance, walking, biking, playing soccer with my five year old) way before it got bad, but now I couldn't even attempt any of these things withour excruciating pain. An older ankle ligament injury became aggravated, doubling the pain. Not fun.

So, I started physical therapy. Ice, tons of ice! Rest (which made me so insane), new shoes (running shoes that took forever to find ones that gave me what I needed), and tons of yoga. To calm my crazy mind, and gently strengthen my body. My weight had started to climb up due to my lack of activity, but I knew if I could somehow get myself healthy and less stressed the journey back would be worth it.

So, I started walking after my son's bus picked him up with a fellow mom (who has since moved away) rain, snow, or shine. I learned to tape my injuries when needed, and started having movie nights with my family. I shared my fears with my husband, who hugged me, listened to me, and encouraged me.

Then, we went to Disney.

Life changing.

I began a Baby Steps to a 5k program, and I signed up for my first 5k. Every morning, without fail (weekends became optional so that my husband and I could work on our dream business) I walked briskly, knowing that slow and steady would be best for my body.

Then I found the Galloway Method and intervals!

To be continued....

I love my Flip Belt. My runs usually take place after my five year gets on the bus, and the lil dude us in the stroller. Not only does my Flip Belt help with tracking steps and keeping the app up to date (steps don't record when I put my phone in the stroller...i learned the hard way!), but I stopped dropping things. Which meant I stopped stopping to pick up the things I dropped which also slowed me down. And, I can carry my iPod, keys...a snack. Or a Hot Wheel to stave off any tears! And, I found this super easy fitness tracker (I even bought one for the five year old!) And wireless earphones in the Target Deal Spot! So, easy mom gifts for under $45!!

BEST HAIR TIES EVER!! These braided elastics are easy to use (no cutting off your circulation while doing the pony or mom bun!), and two to three twists are perfect for a thick ponytail on your morning run.

Raw Threads are my new favorite running attire. Eco friendly and Run Disney ready, plus so many styles and themes if your not into Mouse Magic!

My two favorite mom mini spa treatments. Keratin hair masque (I have tons of hair, and this is my all time favorite deep conditioning treatment!) And who doesn't have puffy eyes cause #momlife?? Caffeine and a cooling roller applicator takes care of that!

And this, just because. Post run treat, or late night indulgence. It's low cal, protein packed, and dare I say DELICIOUS?

Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there. We got this. And hopefully, you get some of this!

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-42734059334981664252017-05-08T10:30:00.001-07:002017-05-08T17:28:20.246-07:00Frugal Mommy Disney Planning: Disney World Within ReachI'm pretty sure it's obvious I love taking my boys to Disney. And given the fact that they are checking wait times daily for their favorite attractions, it's a pretty good bet they love it, too. It's magical.

In the realm of declutter, reduce the chemicals (not that they're all evil), and in the name of frugality (two mortgages and diapers!!!), a few years ago, I began researching alternatives and methods for everyday cleaning and being more kid friendly.

That's when I discovered the amazing, everyday, multipurpose products I already had in my pantry. (Side note, the word pantry always makes me kinda giggle and I'm really not sure why!) Warning, Pinterest will boggle your mind with endless lists of the ways you can use ordinary and extraordinary staples, but really, if you're like me, you need the shortened version. The hope, no matter how small, of having an extra ten seconds to take the world's fastest shower is incredibly important. Especially with two little ones, who just might, if you're extremely lucky, nap at the same time. Of course, you'll probably end up doing something just as important as well. Like laundry or the dishes, because they will never truly be done. Neverending cycle of family life, laundry and dishes.

But, that is not the awesomeness of this post...it's all about apple cider vinegar.

First off, let me tell you, I like salad. But, smelling salad dressing-like fragrances isn't my favorite. Some people actually love the smell. Me? Not so much.

But, as a fruit and veggie cleaner? Fabulous!!! Yep, clean up the produce with apple cider vinegar...just put a few tablespoons or so diluted in water and soak your produce of choice for 5-10 minutes. Then rinse.

Done.

And, if you get fruit flies? Even easier...I use a container from something like Whole Foods Mango Pineapple Salsa (my newest obsession!!!!), poke a few holes in the lid and pour apple cider vinegar about halfway up then watch (or not!) the flies fly right on in to stay. The lid contains the smell (which, as we know, isn't my favorite) and keeps the containment easy to dispose of.

Voila!! Clean produce, and fruit flies be gone!!!

Not Hawaii. That's one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Not Venice, though it feels pretty darn magical. I speak from experience here as I've visited both places.

I'm talking Magic With The Mouse.

Walt Disney World.

With my little ones, who are now 3 and 5.

Now, I've been to Disneyland (or, the Land, as it is sometimes referred to). That was a crazy land in Cali, no shower, six hour flight then straight to the park at 6 p.m. only to be fooled about Splash Mountain's fun at any other time drop by my future husband and his dad. Needless to say, I have very dim memories of being rushed through the park that October. Except for that ride (because we have the moment of said drop forever frozen in time and documented by the Land, including my look of terror and utter hot mess post-flight self), and the Indiana Jones ride. Loved that one.

Fast forward many years later (we did get engaged in our Anaheim hotel...and not on the beach in Malibu, but sigh...), and we are happily married with two lil dudes. Perfect time for a family vacation!

My husband had taken family vacations down to Walt Disney World with his family when he was younger, which at that time included a fabulously long road trip (once in a trans am...or was that California? I always get those mixed up when they tell the story) with his mom and little sister. We are not that adventurous, and opted for flying the friendly skies. Approximately two hours versus hours and hours and hours driving south? Flying every time!

And this past time was incredibly magical.

Like any mom, I'm overwhelmed. I'm happy. I'm embroiled in a messy mix of pure happiness, anxiety, stress, giggles, gratitude, exhaustion, accomplishment...the list goes on and on. And the past year was especially filled with struggles. My feet decided to rebel on me, and I developed plantar fasciitis in one foot, while the other had a flair up from an ankle injury I incurred during my first pregnancy due to the stress of the pf. Not fun. Walking was painful, let alone running around with two very active little dudes. My life is a series of crazy juggling of things, and the things I loved to do (dance, working out, running around with my boys, standing!) were near to impossible.

And we were going to WDW. Where walking is an endless activity.

Long story short, I finally started to find what my body obviously needed (the right shoes for me SO IMPORTANT, time for yoga, breathing!) to counterbalance the years of working in heels on a marble floor.

When we were at Disney, I suddenly felt lighter, happier, and dare I say, magical? Despite the fact my husband was miserable with the virus the rest of us were getting over, we had the most relaxed and wonderful time. I felt lighter, no pain in my feet even after hours of walking all day long. Of course, I had my trusty foot roller (which made TA really interesting, and full of laughs!!), but really I think the best part was the abundance of water I was drinking (I mean, I know how important it is to keep hydrated but had been seriously slacking of late), restful sleep (ah, mommy happiness!!), healthy eating (we aren't big dine out people, and stayed in a place that had a full kitchen) everyday, and YOGA!!!!!

The atmosphere at Disney, of course helped! The wonder and happiness in my boys' faces at every moment was just what a stressed out mommy needed.

When I came home, I knew that I had to figure out how to keep those feelings alive.

And so, my Disney Journey has begun. I've learned tips, tricks, and best of all, how to keep my memories alive everyday while at home.

And, I've begun running again!! Cause, you know a princess can run to the Castle, join the Rebellion, or even Wine and Dine at Epcot. #RUNDISNEYGOALS
The road construction through our development has made the drop off wait anywhere from 15 to 60 longer than usual. And while I can't wait to have a new street with less off road flare, it's caused havoc on our routine. (And our bus driver is kinda awesome, which meant the times I mention picking up my lil dude usually ends up with tearful pleas not too do so.)

This leads to me a few things I made myself finally realize.

I'm DONE.

As in, done waiting for the right time, things to "be in place" so that I can get my dreams and goals achieved. I plan, daydream, but then I let the world overtake me. You know what I mean. Push the things that make me happy, challenge me, and generally are mine to the back burner so that I can mom, wife, work. It's ridiculous.

WHY DO WE DO THIS TO OURSELVES??

This past fall, I started walking everyday after my son jumped on the bus in the morning, pushing my youngest who was two in his stroller. I met a fellow mom whose daughter was in his class just down the street from us, and we walked. She was my catalyst, calling me put for trying to beg off on rainy or cold days. I learned to suck it up, buttercup! This turned into counting steps (thanks, Samsung Health!), and made me really feel energized.

But here's the kicker. I spend way too much time on my phone (Facebook especially!!), or watching tv.

There were days, though that I rarely turn on the tv, which ended up being my happiest! Putting the phone down actually let me accomplish laundry AND yoga!!

So, that's the deal. I'm DONE. I know I need my phone for my fitness tracker, etsy selling, email for my at home job, but I'm going to set up times just for checking in. And stick to them.

And blog more! My endless Disney tips, frugal mommy tips, and hot mess madness. I ran my first 5k this past weekend!!!

This summer, my five year old and I are running Run Disney Virtual 5k shorts, and I've convinced the husband if we can sell our second mortgage house that maybe, just maybe, we will run the castles soon. Grandpa's already convinced.

So, here's to Disney Dreaming. And making your own Pixie Dust!!

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-38910709963582698962016-11-05T07:03:00.001-07:002016-11-05T07:05:06.368-07:00All the Leggings!! Lularoe, What??Seriously. I'm in trouble.

I resist most Facebook fads, if only because it's a bit crazy how many people have begun direct sales blitz via their Facebook page and every single mom/garage/sell it pages with how amazing Beach Body/It Wraps/Wrinkle Cream/Jamberry (which I actually like, cause, well Disney and lace sugar skull wraps!!). Part of me wishes that social media would stay, well, social...and then there's the part that's pretty amazed at how it can be used to make a difference in people's lives.

Now, the whole Lularoe phenom? It, from the outside anyway, looks like just another direct sales pitch...and I have a few friends that have been trying for months to get me to try these "amazing leggings" over and over. The mom groups? Even worse, because then there's pop ups happening all over the place.

I blame them all. Because they were right.

One month ago, I attended a workshop (yep, this mommy bellydances!), and in the midst of trying to not swear like a trucker while squat insanity, one of my newest friends (also trying to keep it clean) asked if tried them yet. (She had just started being a rep, if that's the word...dealer might be more appropriate....and had commented on her cute leggings to distract myself!) I told her no (it came out more as a grunt, but she understood). The next day, she brought me two pairs, said to try them on for size (one size and tall/curvy) and keep the one I liked. As a freebie.

I took them home (yep, we had four days of exquisite torture.. look up Salimpour School...for real. Hard core bellydance technique insanity!), tried them both on. And swore. Cause they were so comfy, cute...and yes, buttery. Solids, but I didn't care. I also discovered I could wear either (which I know from my fifteen plus years of retail experience applied to the larger cut in prints cause they can either run small, or you don't want to stretch the design as much)...

Then I discovered what a unicorn is. These were mine, and the reason this really started. (I noticed that friend was a rep, and asked her about it. Gateway. Just sayin.)

Then you find out why there are UNICORNS. You see, the elusive print you fall in love with isn't as easy to find as you think. Each rep doesn't order from a catalog, or have the ability to order a specific print. Each print is a limited run (I've seen anywhere from 2500 to 5000 on different sites), and once it's gone, it's gone. This is a double edged sword as the rep never knows what she's getting when she orders, say 100 TC leggings...but it does put competition low on the totem pole and in line with the company's values.

So, now I'm in seven groups, because the only ways you can purchase these buttery, addictive things online is through Facebook pop up sales in the rep's group page, or at a local pop up on location.

Sigh.

So, now, I sneak away from my family, searching for the unicorn prints I want (😂 and get those looks from my husband!), search eBay (and have my jaw drop at the prices some of the most sought after pieces sell for...but it's a great place to browse for prints you want!), and try to get the mail before anyone else.

I'm afraid to count how many I have, and there are a few mystery pairs that are going to be given as presents, but they are fantastic for everyday wear, a bit dressed up (go on Pinterest and you'll see!), or for yoga and, yes, bellydance.

Happy hunting!

Then rinse.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/<strike>5gmDMrh1-k/V5nvN1tI0HI/AAAAAAAAAuo/A1IKazsTLps/s2560/%25255BUNSET%25255D.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/</strike>5gmDMrh1-k/V5nvN1tI0HI/AAAAAAAAAuo/A1IKazsTLps/s350/%25255BUNSET%25255D.jpg" border="0" />

Done.

And, if you get fruit flies? Even easier...I use

a container from something like Trader Joe's Mango Salsa (my newest obsession!!!!), poke a few holes in the lid and pour apple cider vinegar about halfway up then watch (or not!) the flies fly right on in to stay. The lid contains the smell (which, as we know, isn't my favorite) and keeps the containment easy to dispose of.

Voila!! Clean produce, and fruit flies be gone!!!

posted from Bloggeroid
Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-56539424918816853952016-06-14T06:18:00.001-07:002016-06-14T06:18:31.954-07:00Chaos, Direct Sales, And Mommy Time
Direct sales have invaded and taken over my Facebook feed. Between Jamberry (which I've tried and love for my toes!), 21 Fix, Keep, and who knows what else, I'm overloaded with equal parts guilt (some of these friends are really friends, and I want to support them), annoyance (am I just another part of their "business" and that's it?), and the wondering if all those shakes/wraps/fixes really work (and if they do why isn't everyone doing them??).

Honest moment disclaimer. I'm not a fan of any kind of fix, etc, because I wonder why people can't find a way to do it themselves? And, a "fix" implies your broken...and after 21 days, you won't be. Now, sure the support systems of some of these things is really amazing for some people! I get it, we are all different. But, the problem is I have so many other things (Legos, food, training pants, food, food...I have two little boys!!!) that it is just crazy to spend more money on things like this, at least for me.

There's a bit of crazy happening in my life, mainly the daily chaos of raising two little boys and the struggles of trying to do what we love as a way to support our family. And all that other stuff. Like the dishes. Laundry. Sweeping the floor. Getting a shower more than twice a week.

In the spirit of my New Mommy, New Rules once upon a time dream, I'm getting back to basics. Tips, learnings, good times...

For today, get outside and enjoy the beauty of the world. Green, lush scenery and flowers in bloom, the scents of herbs growing in your garden, the sound

s of cicadas showing up for their once in sixteen (or is it seventeen?) years...read a real book in the sunshine (don't forget the sunblock!).

The rule for today? Do something for you, maybe with your little ones or maybe just for you.

Even if it's just a quick shower.

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-67555851916284376432016-02-11T11:44:00.001-08:002016-02-11T11:44:11.155-08:00Clutter in the Closet: 40 In 40 Challenge
I'm utterly and alternately terrified, frustrated, and appalled at the state of my closet. When we bought our home, I was ecstatic to see the extra room off our master suite. Office? Nursery?

Nope.

Divine walk-in closet.

I found a closet organizing system, complete with long and short hanging options, a shoe organizer (oh, the things of dreams!!), and other perfectly wonderful organizing components that made my inner fashion diva squeal with delight.

Once the set up was complete, I gleefully separated my black works pieces from the longer dresses and pants. Hung or folded sweaters and hoodies, tees and tanks, jeans...summer from fall, spring and winter.

Then, the lil ones came. Gone were the afternoons off, rearranging and lovingly keeping my closet beautiful.

In fact, it has turned into this...

Sigh.

Bring on the Forty Things In Forty Days Challenge!

Donate, sell, or pitch. One (or mire things) a day. Because I'm afraid it might take over the rest of the house. Which means a war with the Legos and Hot Wheels, with Lightning McQueen as General McQueen. I might be watching fee too many YouTube videos aimed at preschoolers...

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-87151391068779808032015-10-20T07:44:00.001-07:002015-10-20T07:44:18.523-07:00Frugal Mommy...Washing the Washer DIY
Our washer suddenly started having the fall funk...which was making that amazing laundry scent that gently wafts down the hall have a spooky monster mash kinda smell.

After Pinterest and Facebook research, my frugal mommy side decided that buying a "wash for ly washer" just seemed absolutely ridiculous, especially when I had the DIY ingredients right in my spookily decorated kitchen!

Armed with my big ol' jug o' white vinegar and box of baking soda, I marched dutifully into my laundry room (also noting the stalled state if my laundry room update, but more on that later!) prepared for battle.

Easy as one, two, three.

1.) Pour one cup vinegar in washer basin (or bleach dispenser), with a generous dash of baking soda (maybe a quarter cup). Bonus vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser.

2.) Select hot water, lowest water level.

3.) Start the washer, and enjoy the self cleaning of one thing in the house.

Told ya.

Jamberry Review
Time for myself is one of my most precious commodities, and add to that anything much beyond a shower is just about at the realm of impossibility.

But, with two lil dudes, money is still an issue. Cause diapers, fresh fruit (my boys loooove raspberries, and just about any other fruit they can get their lil hands on!), snacks, and three kinds of milk, money doesn't stretch as far as it used to. Luxuries are just that. Luxuries.

But, once in awhile, I love to paint my nails and polish my toes. However, that in and of itself is a huge task. Either I smudge as I go from picking up lil guy, getting juice/snacks, or breaking up the newest toy battle or I barely even get two painted in five minutes.

After being inundated with invites and being unknowingly included in various parties on Facebook and groups, I became anti-Jamberry. Not only did I become annoyed that everybody seemed to be using our "friend" status to try to sell me something, no one asked if I would be interested. They just assumed.

Fast forward six months...

Lately, I've finally found my I'm not just my mommy stride. Well, some days I do. Which means there are days when my hair actually gets brushed (and sometimes even styled!), a bit of makeup is applied, and even brushing my teeth after each meal...or snack.

I decided it was time. Or, I should day I saw a Jamberry design that I loooooved. An mandala (I yoga for sanity, health, and with my lil dudes!), which led to finally reaching out to a friend who touted the amazing results of Jamberry and was a consultant. A habitual nail biter, which I often witnessed firsthand, she actually had nails (for her, anyway!) even though she ran an at home daycare that looked pretty good even after a few days.

I broke down after seeing the super adorable Halloween offerings and ordered. I had planned to treat myself to a pedicure, so four sheets were about the same. Plus, to be honest, I rarely enjoy a pedicure...too much on my to do list to sit still that long and make small talk.

They arrived..and sat waiting for some action for more than two weeks. I admit, I was intimidated due to my polish with lil dudes experience. But, yesterday, I gave in. Mostly because Halloween is just a few weeks away and didn't want to have wasted them.

And, after a bit of a shaky start due to a bit of caffeine (I drink a cup of half caff once in awhile), I successfully used a hair dryer, scissors, cuticle stick, and nail file to apply six spooky nail designs along with polishing the four extras with a quick drying metallic OPI nail lacquer.

Side note...the nail lacquer already chipped once. Sigh.

Easy, once I figured it out. And insanely adorable. Plus, I felt a bit like me again...which only makes mommy even more ready to take on the day!

Only two days in, but with the endless hand washing, baking, toy fixing, and battery changing, not a problem in sight.

I kinda like you, Jamberry. And Dem Bones.

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-15775794493760248722015-07-27T11:47:00.001-07:002015-07-27T11:47:06.367-07:00It's OK. Seriously.
It's ok.

You don't have to get everything done. The dishes can wait. The laundry will always be there. Seriously, it is neverending. So, don't worry about getting everything cleaned up, every single day. Because it will still be there.

But the snuggles, the giggles, the tickle wars? Those won't.

This summer, so far, has been a huge battle for my family. Two mortgages, a job that has been an almost seven day a week sometimes twelve hour day for daddy, an almost three thousand dollar assessment for our now empty second mortgage property that was housing my very ill mother-in-law (owner occupies clause that was added after we owned the property), emergency triple bypass surgery for said mother-in-law, plus the general insanity of life has all taken a toll on the condition of our home.

The floors, the dishes, laundry room, toys...it is seriously is just a complete hot mess.

But, I've learned something very important. It doesn't matter.

The giggles, smiles, trips to the zoo, playing with the hose outside...reading books.

That's what matters. Even when I have to hide my phone from my YouTube loving three year old.

So, tomorrow I will try to get to a few things. But for now, it is ok.

Seriously.

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-92230845890805177842015-07-03T06:52:00.001-07:002015-07-03T06:52:11.774-07:00Frugal Mommy...Homemade Peanut Butter
As soon as I became pregnant, I began to notice (even though I had been label watching before!) the insane amount of "extras" in the foods I was buying for my family. Thus began my quest for healthier versions of the things my family loved.

Which leads me to...peanut butter. I don't know about how the old PB rolls in your house, but over here, whether a PB&J, on a banana, with chocolate (you know you've done it!), or on a spoon solo can all happen at any given moment.

Needless to say, we go through a lot of peanut butter. We switched to the "natural" kind of popular brands, but the palm oil always bothered me. How could I give my boys something that harmed the homes of the animals they loved so? (Yep, the guilt sets in often via monkeys over here.)

After shopping at Whole Foods while away from the family (it was the only grocery store close by), I discovered many amazing things (mostly that I loved Aldi's for their affordable organic and basic grocery merch). Kombucha (which is also, I discovered, available at Target!), and...real, homemade (as much as it could be!) peanut butter.

I admit, I love texture in my food. Which means I love all that grainy goodness in supposed "healthy" foods. I devoured the peanut butter, and couldn't wait to try my hand at it at home.

Easiest thing I've ever done. Seriously.

Aldi's carries plain old unsalted, dry roasted peanuts for $2.19 (plus honey roasted with salt for $2.39), plus organic clover honey (though I had a bit of the regular to finish up this time) and organic coconut oil (which I use for so many things!!).

And that's it, really.

Super simple.

1 1/2 cups dry roasted unsalted peanuts

1/2 cup honey roasted peanuts

(2 cups total, so if you prefer just one kind, go for it.)

1/2 to 1 teaspoon coconut oil (for smoothness plus it does add a bit of flavor)

1/2 to 1 teaspoon honey, depending on flavor desired. Optional, but I love it!

Salt, if desired. I found that the honey roasted added just enough.

And...just add the peanuts to your food processor. I have a regular old processor, nothing fancy, and I've used it for just about everything. Turn it on until they are crumb like. At this point, you can add a bit of the coconut oil until you get the consistency desired. Add the honey to taste.

Done. That easy.

Of course, you can double the recipe if needed. We went through this fairly quick because the boys loved it so much!

Added bonus? No plastic jar to recycle! I used a glass mason jar from my collection.

I can't wait to try other nut butters, too!

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-75462496825310577092015-05-19T06:56:00.001-07:002015-05-19T06:56:50.237-07:00Letting Go
When I made the decision to leave my full time job to raise my boys, I knew things would be challenging. Money would be an issue, but there were choices we were all too ready to make.

But, I knew those challenges would be worth experiencing the moments fellow mother's (and food friends) were missing out on.

I didn't realize there would be other outside factors that would hinder my happiness, or that I would need a hard lesson in what really matters. Or, to know there are battles that no matter how wrong or unfair, you just won't win.

The key is to stay true to yourself, and not allow these situations to change your values.

In a previous blog, I shared a letter that I had written to the homeowners on the street where we were, and have been paying an additional mortgage for seven plus years.

Sadly, the situation has escalated. Because we put my husband's gravely ill mother in the home and chose to not put her name on the deed (exposing us to her medical debts), we now have an assessment against us for $1800 plus an additional $950 in lawyers fees. Our appeal hearing, which is required by Ohio Law, was denied. The details are the saddest example of how neighbors should act towards one another, and are too much to relive in this blog.

I refuse to let them or this situation take one more moment of my happiness.

But, thanks to the assessment, my three year old will miss out on soccer, swimming lessons, an air conditioner and furnace that works, and quite possibly, preschool.

This I will not allow. So, this summer will be filled with trips to the zoo (season passes purchased before this whole debacle), bike riding lessons with mom, nature walks in the beautiful Metro Parks, and library trips with craft time at our local craft store.

Time to get more frugal. Perhaps a garage sale is in order, another eBay binge of our possessions, and some creative DIY projects.

Bring on the summer, full of happiness, giggles, and no regrets.

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-37636380449323775312015-03-27T08:02:00.000-07:002015-03-27T08:02:04.011-07:00Dear HOA...An Open Letter. And Why We Should Always Help One Another.Today's post isn't a Happy one. It isn't about the joys of mommyhood, or the cute thing my beautiful, healthy boys did today.

But it is about something happening in my life that is adversely effecting my family, for which I'm so thankful for. The family, not the situation.

This is an open letter that I wrote last week after a sleepless night of worry and seemingly endless anxiety. I addressed it to our homeowners association of of first home that we still currently own and pay a mortgage on in addition to the home our family currently resides in, but I've left off the name for the purposes of this post.

"To be honest, I don't know why I'm writing the letter. I'm pretty certain i won't send it, knowing that it will do no good, trying to appeal to any of you as fellow homeowners, parents, and people living their lives the best we can.

When my husband and I first decided we were going to buy a home rather than rent an apartment, we began looking in (name withheld) and (name withheld)because my future father-in-law owned a (developer's name withheld) home, and we loved the neighborhoods, homes, and the way the land was preserved with mature trees and hills. We used to drive through (name withheld) on date nights, dreaming that one day, we could afford to live in this gorgeous neighborhood.

When we began looking, we found an open house on (name withheld) Lane, one of the streets we drove down on those nights. The power was out, we viewed the house by candlelight. I fell in love, and knew this was home. We scheduled a second showing, and again toured with that candle. I still have that candle.

We moved into our new home, full of hope and excited to make this house our own. We painted, updated, and moved our meager belongings in. We thought we would never have enough possessions to possibly fill in the rooms we now owned.

As the years went by, we enjoyed every moment in our home. Fires in the stone wall fireplace on chilly nights, Christmas with my parents the year before my mom passed, family gatherings and Thanksgiving dinners. Friends over to celebrate and make memories.

Home was a special place for us. But, after a few years, we knew we were starting to outgrow our first home. When the opportunity to purchase a home literally two streets away, my heart felt this was right. We would still be in our beautiful neighborhood that we had first fallen in love with! And though our new home would need a tremendous amount of work, we just knew our family that now included our golden retriever would fill it with our dreams and make it our own.

When we talked to our loan officer, we all knew we would not have a problem selling our first home, or possibly leasing it. But we had things working against us out of our control.

The real estate market crashed, and suddenly our home wasn't selling with the slow down of buyers. Plus, it had electric heat which had suddenly become a negative because of rising costs.

So, with two mortgages pushing down on our finances, we rented out to someone we knew would love the house like we did, and raise his family there. This helped our situation somewhat.

Regardless of any situation that may or may not have occurred" (note: there was a situation in which our renters felt uncomfortable), "we were told that the as the board was considering not allowing rentals. We were stunned. We had hoped to keep the home as an investment in the neighborhood we so loved and still lived in. In fact, if we moved again, we hope to stay in these tree filled streets.

But, our renters could stay until their lease was up. However, they felt uncomfortable and decided to leave.

We would have two mortgages, hoa fees, and two (name withheld) hoa fees upon the other expenses home ownership comes with. We tried to put the home on the market once again, but we couldn't afford to sell it at the one verbal offer we received. It was actually cheaper to pay two mortgages, and strain our finances.

But, life goes on. We decided to start our family, praying that the house would eventually sell and not putting our plans on hold. Our son was born, and still we were in the same situation. Things began to happen...our air conditioner broke down, tires weren't able to hold air in my Saturn, the furnace no longer working properly, just to name a few.
But, we still have our other home and all the expenses that go along with it. Those thing would have to wait. Then, we had our second son. I thank God every single day that they are healthy, happy boys.

My husband and I have always prided ourselves with keeping up with our responsibilities. We were advised, at one point, just to let the house go into foreclosure. We were appalled, not only because we still lived in the neighborhood and this would drastically affect home values, but because it just wasn't what you were supposed to do. It was a responsibility we had accepted and would somehow fulfill.

For years.

When my mother-in-law lost her husband and her health took a serious turn, we decided to let her stay in our empty home (that, because it has stood empty, had repairs that needed to be made because things had fallen into disrepair being vacant) while we began to prepare to place it once again on the market, and make it easier to take her to her medical treatments.

But, the home has to be owner occupied according to the new by-laws.

We were informed we would have to either move her out, or put her on the title. But, by putting her on the title, the home would be vulnerable to any debts or MEDICAL expenses. So, in the middle of this freezing winter, we have begun to look for a new place for her to move to. The repairs are taking longer due to scheduling issues, and finding a reliable contractor.

At our home, our air conditioner and furnace still are working. Thank goodness we have a furnace for our living area. We have been using space heaters for our bedroom and our son's room, blankets and Styrofoam insulation on the windows to keep the heat in. Fans in the summer help somewhat. Our checking account has been overdrawn multiple times while filling up our gas tanks. Vacations, air shows, even simple date nights have been forsaken to save money. We can't afford a babysitter, even while I was in the hospital having our second soon. Our furniture (as is much of our baby furniture and son's clothing) is almost all second hand, given by friends and family. The strain has been hard to bear.

All because of our once well loved home on (name withheld) Lane, that we have been unable to sell or rent out to help with expenses.

We still love the neighborhood, and care about the value of our homes. We hope to have things settled by this Summer. Of course, this hope has been strung out over a few years.

I write this not to blame you. Yes, I feel an immense amount of resentment. I would be lying if I said I didn't. But, that resentment stems more from the fact that I no longer love that home as I once did. It is tied to far too many things that have broken pieces of my heart.

I honest cannot understand why, as human beings, we can't help one another. How an empty home falling into disrepair and crippling a young family financially and emotionally outweighs perceived loss in property value because of renting out a home, especially considering we own another home a walk away. Obviously, property value is important to us. Any real estate agent would tell you the longer a home stands empty, the lower the property value goes. I only hope that we will be able to get through this this year.

My wish to you is that if you ever go through hardship, your friends and neighbors give you the support and assistance you need. That in your time of need, hearts are open to you and that you are given the hope of a better time that my family wasn't.

I will teach my boys to not lump everyone into one group, and that people deserve respect and hope. That is what you have gifted my family with. To teach them what not to do. For those of you that have not been directly involved in the decision making or coming up with this new by-law after years, I apologize and wish you, along with everyone who owns a home on (name withheld) nothing but happiness.

When all is said and done, as I take my beautiful, healthy, happy boys on a walk in my neighborhood, I will smile when I walk past our street. Because it is the right thing to do."

Just yesterday, my husband and I received a letter stating we were in violation of our bylaws, and that we hadn't told the board our plans to rectify the situation. Which we had. We had informed our board members, by letter, that my mother-in-law would be moving once we had found a place to move her to.

But we were now facing an assessment of $1800 in addition to any further legal fees the board incurred.

I posted a short statement on my Facebook page, to which many expressed their disbelief.

But, a somewhat disturbing thing happened.

A friend contacted me, and told me the exact same situation had happened to her and her family just a few years ago. Exactly.

They had purchased their new home, and we're carrying two mortgages. Unable to sell their home, they rented it out. For less than what they were paying on the mortgage, plus hoa fees. Their association decided to disallow rentals.

They were facing the exact same situation we are in. After three years of barely squeezing by with their young family, filled with financial and emotional stress, and sleepless nights, they made a difficult decision.

They walked away.

It was a decision they came to not easily, and in fact, it was incredibly difficult. This decision would adversely effect their way of life, but they had no other choice. They couldn't afford to sell the house due to the market, and couldn't have renters to help with the cost.

It made me wonder how many other people were in this situation of financial hardship, good people who were responsible, but pushed into a decision they never thought they would have to make. And denied any help or assistance from a board they paid hoa fees to, all in the name of protect the "value" of their homes. Because nothing says value than a vacant house, sitting empty, and foreclosures.

"Don't pee on your brother!"

"Did you pee on your brother again?"

"Don't play your baby bongos by the front window while you're naked! Your names not Matthew McCaughna-hey!" (I'm spelling it that way because that's the way it was said...as lil guy once again peed on hia big brother.)

All of this occurred right after I spilled corn starch EVERYWHERE while lil man climbed up onto the chair I had been standing on while searching in an upper cabinet. Sigh. And lil guy had a bit of a rash, so I was letting him "dry out" and not be irritated.
What a day...

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-35925807395865594742015-02-20T06:43:00.001-08:002015-02-20T06:43:09.610-08:00Making The Most Of Mommy Time Quick Tips
Time management took on a whole new meaning with the arrival of baby boy number two. Multi-tasking raised to a magician skill level, combined with a pencil schedule (read, flexible, eraser friendly, and downright throw it out the window) attitude.

That's when I figured out a few tips that make some days (not all, of course...that would just be silly!) feel as though I've accomplished something...or things!

Take advantage of early mornings. My boys wake up early, which means I wake up early. Amazingly enough, I kind of like that at times. I get myself a decaf pot brewing (or if I fell real fancy, I brew a nice cup of Teavana). Then, I get my game plan on. If I can get three things at least of my today list, it is a win. Laundry, dishes, and dinner in the crockpot. Usually, the boys are in the best mood early and play well together, allowing me to have a pretty productive morning. Then, I have the rest of the day to pick up leggos and Cars.

Multitasking is a must. My house is u-shaped. Therefore if I have to go to one side or the other, I try to take something with me or grab the Swiffer to join me on my journey. There's always clothes to be dropped off to the laundry room!

Make a realistic list. There's no way I can get the whole house cleaned, mopped, sparkling and perfect. But, I can get laundry started, the dishwasher emptied, and a fabulous tickle session in. Yep, I put that one on. Not only to check off another item, but to remind me that there are things more important than a clean house.

Finally, put down your phone. Seriously. It is a time sucker. I try to have one day a week that the phone is just a phone, and not a mindless time escape. Then, I actually try (this doesn't always happen, because I do have to do work related "tasks" at times) to only check my phone at a scheduled time. First thing in the morning, nap time, in between daddy coming home and dinner, and before bed.

But, the biggest thing I do for my time management road to a great day? Don't stress if things don't go the way you plan. Big deal. Happiness isn't a clean house, a perfect list checked off item by item...it is those moments that melt your heart.
I've started to make a few things at home rather than buy them at the store, not only saving money, but I know what is in things plus it turns out to be very environmentally friendly!

Once I had my boys, I started paying more attention to what we were putting in (and on) our bodies. And even before, when I was pregnant. Certain things started going the way of a desolate, deserted road.

No more artificial sweeteners, less processed food (single ingredients, or at least ones that I could pronounce!), no more butter substitutes, as few artificial colors as possible...

In that quest, I discovered how wonderful Pinterest can be for all things DIY (I'm currently researching a pallet project).

Here is one of my favorite recipes that I've added my own twist to. At my house, chewy trail mix granola bars are like gold. For a busy mommy (especially while breastfeeding!), a quick, healthy snack is a must. Plus, my husband takes them to work, or as a on the go snack!

CHEWY TRAIL MIX GRANOLA BARS

1/3 cup honey
1/4 brown sugar
1/4 unsalted butter
2 1/2 cups quick oats
1/2 cup crisped rice cereal
1/4 flax seeds
1/2 sliced or crushed almonds
Generous dash of coarse sea salt
1 tsp almond extract
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 chopped dried cherries
1/2 raisins
1/4 mini chocolate chips or finely chopped dark chocolate
Coconut oil (to "grease" the pan)

1.) Preheat oven to 350.
2.) Line baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place oats, flax seed, and almonds on, evenly.
3.) Bake for five minutes, stir. Continue baking for five minutes, lightly toasting to a golden brown (not too dark)

4.) In medium bowl, mix cherries, raisins, rice cereal, salt, almond extract, and vanilla extract.

5.) In small heavy sauce pan, combine honey, brown sugar, and butter on medium heat until sugar dissolves.

6.) Pour warm, toasted oat mixture into bowl with cherries, etc. Use the foil to line your baking/brownie pan. Lightly grease with coconut oil.

7.) Carefully pour in warm honey mixture, stirring to ensure everything getsvcoated. Add in almost all chocolate (I like to save some to press into the top as well). Don't worry about the chocolate melting, it will help with the chewy factor!

8.) Spread mixture evenly into lined baking pan. Use a bit of the coconut oil on the back of a spatula and PRESS DOWN EVENLY. The better you press, the better the stay together factor. Press in remaining chocolate.

9.) Refrigerate for two hours. Cut into bars. Store in an airtight container for about a week and a half. If they last that long!

I personally love all the bits that fall off...perfect for greek yogurt.

Keep in mind, the possibilities are endless. Use whatever extras you like! I used coconut flax granola, dried berries with white chocolate...the best part is the cost. We would spend eight to ten dollars a week...now we spend that in a month!!

Enjoy!!

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8255738944149705315.post-36345131265705631642015-01-20T11:39:00.001-08:002015-01-20T11:39:38.053-08:00Frugal Mommy Tip: Off Season Savings
Frugal doesn't mean cheap. It means your smart. One of my favorite tips for a stay at home mommy to be a money saving, frugal, SMART mommy is to buy off season.

For example, the two weeks after holidays such as Christmas, Halloween, even Valentine's Day are real bargain hunting extravaganzas.

Just last week, as I was checking off the everyday items from my grocery list, I spotted the final markdowns of random Christmas baking novelty mixes. Marshmallow rice crispy tree kits ($4.50 now $.25!!), ugly sweater sugar cookie kits ($3.99 now $.50), ninja gingerbread men cookie kit ($3.99 now $.50), and red velvet cake ball kit ($3.99 now $.50). So, for $4.25, I now have two red velvet cake mixes, two cookie kits, and five bags of rice crispy cereal/marshmallows, plus white chocolate wafers, red and green candy wafers, and two ziplocs full of decorating items.

Red velvet will be perfect for Valentine's Day, especially considering the ugly sweater sugar cookies came with heart sprinkles. And, the rice crispy cereal will become treats, or breakfast and cups of marshmallow filled cups of cocoa!

Not too bad, if I do say so myself.

posted from Bloggeroid

Arihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09077163595737197017noreply@blogger.com0
